Word to PDF, and why it is worth doing before you send
A .docx does not carry a fixed page layout. It carries instructions that Word interprets using the fonts, printer drivers, and version installed on whatever machine opens it. That is why a dissertation that ends neatly on page 40 for you can spill onto page 41 for your supervisor, and why a carefully positioned table drifts a line when opened on a Mac.
PDF removes the interpretation step. Fonts are embedded, page boundaries are fixed, and every reader sees the same document. For anything being submitted, graded, signed, printed, or filed, converting first is the difference between a layout you designed and a layout the recipient's software improvised.
It also matters for compatibility. PDF opens natively in every browser, phone, and e-reader with nothing installed, while .docx needs Word, Google Docs, or LibreOffice — and each renders it slightly differently. The one thing you lose is editability, which is usually the point.

Are .doc files supported, or only .docx?
Both. The legacy binary .doc format and the modern .docx format are accepted across these tools.
Will my formatting survive the conversion?
Yes. Headings, lists, tables, images, page breaks, headers and footers are preserved. Word to TXT is the deliberate exception — it strips formatting by design and returns raw text.
Is the text in the PDF still selectable?
Yes. Word to PDF produces real text, so the output stays selectable, searchable, and readable by screen readers. It is not a picture of your pages.
How can a text document be too large to upload?
Text is tiny; images are not. A .docx that has grown past 10 MB is almost always carrying full-resolution photos or screenshots that are displayed small. Compression resamples those to their display size and typically removes most of the file's weight.
Does PDF to Word give me a properly editable document?
It returns a real .docx with editable text and preserved structure. Text-based PDFs convert cleanly; scanned documents are images of text and will need OCR before anything is editable.
