Limitations

Only embedded pictures are re-encoded; text, styles, tracked changes and comments are untouched. A .docx that is large because of embedded objects (an Excel sheet, a video) will not shrink.
Pictures are downscaled so their longest edge is at most 1920 px; a picture you later crop and enlarge may look soft.

Will compressing a Word file remove my formatting?

No. Only the pictures inside the file are re-encoded. Text, headings, tables, styles, comments and tracked changes are written back exactly as they were.

The document's text, formatting, comments, and revision marks are structural data and pass through intact. Compression works on the embedded media inside the file, not on your content or its editing history.
