What Resize Image does

Change an image's pixel dimensions. This is normally about clearing a limit somewhere else — a form that rejects anything over a fixed width, a profile picture that must be square, or a 12-megapixel phone photo being used as a small thumbnail where the full resolution is wasted bandwidth.

When you'd use it

  • A header image that must be exactly 1200 × 630 for social previews
  • Fitting a photo to a passport-photo pixel size
  • Shrinking a phone photo to a sensible web size

Limitations

  • Enlarging past the original size interpolates pixels and looks soft; the tool does not invent detail.
  • Resizing writes a new file; EXIF metadata such as camera settings is not copied across.

Questions

What presets are available?

YouTube thumbnail (1280×720), Instagram post (1080×1080), YouTube banner (2560×1440), and more.

What is the difference between resizing and compressing?

Resizing changes how many pixels the image has. Compressing keeps the dimensions but stores them more efficiently. If a site rejects your file for being too large in megabytes, try compressing first; if it rejects it for being too wide or tall, resize.

Can I enlarge a small image without it going blurry?

Not meaningfully. Enlarging invents pixels that were never captured, so the result looks soft however it is done. Scaling down is lossless in appearance; scaling up is not.

Will resizing keep the proportions?

Yes, the aspect ratio is preserved so nothing is stretched. If you need a different shape, crop to that shape first and resize afterwards.
