What PDF to Word does
Convert a PDF into an editable Word document. This is the tool you want when you need to change something and no longer have the source — a form to fill in, a template inherited from a colleague who has left, or a report that needs one paragraph updated without retyping all forty pages.
How it works
- 01
Upload your PDF
Add one PDF file from your device.
- 02
Convert to Word
DocsBolt extracts page text into a structured `.docx` document.
- 03

When you'd use it
- A contract arrived as a PDF and two clauses need rewording before it goes back
- Reusing last year's report text without retyping it
- A lecturer's PDF handout that you want to annotate inline in Word
Limitations
- Scanned PDFs have no text layer; the output would be empty. Run OCR first — DocsBolt's OCR tool is not live yet.
- Dense or borderless tables are the hardest case: cells can merge or split where the PDF drew no lines.
- Fonts not embedded in the PDF are substituted with the closest Word has.

Questions
Will the output be editable?
Yes. The result is a standard .docx with fully selectable, editable text — every paragraph becomes a real Word paragraph, not an image of the page. You can restyle headings, fix typos, and copy sections into other documents straight away.
Does this keep complex PDF layout perfectly?
No converter does, and DocsBolt is honest about it: the tool prioritises clean, structured text extraction. Simple reports and text documents come through very close to the original; heavily designed pages with columns, floating images, or decorative layers are simplified so the text stays usable.
Can I convert a scanned PDF to Word?
This tool reads the text layer of a digital PDF. A scanned document is just a photo of a page — it has no text layer to extract. Run a scan through an OCR tool first, then convert the OCR output here.
Is it safe to upload a confidential PDF?
Files are processed for the conversion only — they are not published anywhere or used for anything else. For highly sensitive contracts, the standard advice for any online tool applies: check your organisation's policy first.
Why convert PDF to Word instead of copy-pasting the text?
Copy-paste from a PDF loses paragraph structure and inserts hard line breaks mid-sentence, which you then clean up by hand. Conversion rebuilds the document structure in one pass — for anything longer than a page it is significantly faster.
How faithful is the layout?
Text-led documents convert well and stay close to the original. Complex layouts with multi-column text, floating images or intricate tables need tidying afterwards, because PDF stores positioned marks rather than a document structure to rebuild from.
Will a scanned PDF convert?
Only into a picture of the page, not editable text. A scan is an image; recognising characters in it requires OCR, which is a different process.
Why did my table come out oddly?
PDF has no real concept of a table — it records lines and text at coordinates. Reconstructing rows and columns from that is guesswork, and dense tables are where it most often goes wrong.
What happens to images and diagrams?
Embedded raster images are placed in the document at the position they occupied on the page. Vector drawings and charts are rasterised into a picture of the same size, so they remain visible but are not editable as shapes.
Which engine does the conversion, and why does it matter?
pdf2docx is used first because it reconstructs columns, tables with ruling lines and floating images; if a file defeats it, DocsBolt's own flow engine takes over and produces a simpler, paragraph-based document. Either way the text is real, editable Word text, never an image.
Does the Word file keep the fonts?
Font names and sizes are carried over. If a font from the PDF is not installed on your computer, Word substitutes the nearest available one, which can change line breaks slightly — the text itself is unaffected.
