What Flip Image does

Mirror an image horizontally or vertically. The usual reason is a selfie or webcam capture that came out reversed — front cameras mirror the preview, so anything with writing in the shot ends up backwards. Flipping horizontally puts it right. Vertical flipping is rarer and mostly used for reflection effects in design work.

The flip happens in your browser on a drawing canvas: the image is decoded, drawn mirrored, and saved again in the same format. Because the file is rebuilt from pixels, everything that was stored alongside them is dropped — EXIF camera settings, the date taken, and GPS location if the phone recorded one. For a photo that is about to be posted publicly that is usually welcome; for an archive copy, keep the original.

Orientation is read before flipping. Phones often save a photo sideways with a tag that says "display rotated"; the tool honours that tag first, so what you see in the preview is what gets mirrored, and the output carries no tag at all — it is stored the way it looks.

When you'd use it

  • A selfie with backwards text in the background
  • Mirroring a logo for a reflection effect
  • Correcting a webcam capture that came out reversed

Limitations

  • The image is rebuilt from its pixels, so EXIF metadata (camera, date, GPS location) is not in the output.
  • Flipping mirrors the whole image; text and logos in the picture will read backwards after a horizontal flip.

Questions

Why does my selfie look backwards?

Most phone and laptop front cameras mirror the live preview so it feels like a mirror, and some save the image that way too. Text in the background gives it away immediately. A horizontal flip corrects it.

Will flipping reduce the quality?

The pixels are not resampled — each one simply moves to its mirrored position — so nothing goes soft. A PNG comes out identical apart from the orientation. A JPG or WebP has to be re-encoded when it is saved (at quality 92 and 90 respectively), which costs a small amount of detail you will not see at normal size; if you plan to flip and re-save many times, keep a PNG master.

Should I flip or rotate?

Flip produces a mirror image — left becomes right. Rotate turns the picture without mirroring it. If your photo is sideways you want rotate; if it reads backwards you want flip.
