What WebP to JPG does

Convert WebP images back to JPEG. This comes up because WebP is now what many sites serve, so it is what you end up with when you save an image — and then some other piece of software refuses it. Older photo editors, a good number of upload forms, print services and some office suites still expect JPEG.

Decoding runs in the browser, which means the same engine that displays WebP on web pages reads the file — including lossless WebP and WebP with transparency. The pixels are then encoded as baseline JPEG at quality 92. Transparent regions are composited onto white first, because JPEG has no alpha channel; if the image was a logo on a transparent background, convert to PNG instead to keep it.

An animated WebP is read as its first frame only. Colour profiles are not embedded in the output, so a wide-gamut image may look slightly flatter in a colour-managed viewer; for the web this makes no visible difference.

Limitations

  • The image is rebuilt from its pixels, so EXIF metadata (camera, date, GPS location) is not in the output.
  • Animated WebP files convert their first frame only.
  • Transparency becomes a solid background; JPEG cannot store an alpha channel.

Questions

Why won't the site accept my WebP file?

Plenty of upload forms validate against a fixed list of extensions that predates WebP. The file is perfectly valid; the form simply does not recognise it. Converting to JPEG sidesteps the check.

Will the JPEG be lower quality?

There is a small loss, since one lossy format is being decoded and re-encoded into another. At normal viewing size it is very hard to see, but keep the WebP if you may need to convert again later.

What happens to transparent areas?

JPEG cannot store transparency, so any transparent region becomes solid — usually white. If transparency matters, convert to PNG instead.
