What Repair PDF does

Attempt to recover a PDF that will not open. Files get damaged in ordinary ways — a download that stopped early, a USB drive pulled out mid-write, a crash while saving. Many such files are structurally broken but still contain most of their content, and rebuilding the internal index is often enough to bring them back.

Limitations

  • Repair rebuilds the cross-reference table and object structure. It cannot recover content that was never written — a truncated download stays truncated.
  • Some fixes change object numbering, which can invalidate a digital signature in the file.

Questions

Can this fix every broken PDF?

No. It helps when the file is still readable enough to be reopened and rewritten.

Should I keep the original file?

Yes. Keep the original until you confirm the repaired copy works.

Will every damaged PDF be recoverable?

No. If the file is structurally confused but the page data survives, recovery usually works. If the data itself was never written or has been overwritten, nothing can reconstruct it.

Might I lose parts of the document?

Possibly. Recovery salvages what is readable, so badly damaged pages may come back incomplete or be dropped. Always compare the result against what you expected.

Should I try this before asking for the file again?

It is worth a minute, but if the sender still has the original, requesting a fresh copy is more reliable than any repair.
