What CSV to Excel does
Convert CSV into a real Excel workbook. CSV holds values and nothing else — no formulas, no formatting, no column widths, no multiple sheets. Saving it as .xlsx gives you a file that can carry all of that, and stops Excel mangling things like leading zeros and dates every time the CSV is reopened.
How it works

Formats and limits
- Accepts
- .csv
- Produces
- Excel (.xlsx)
- Files per run
- One
- Size limit
- 200 MB per file
When you'd use it
- A CSV export whose leading-zero IDs Excel keeps breaking
- Building a workbook from a system export without re-importing
- Sending data to someone who expects an .xlsx
Limitations
- Values are typed by inspection: numbers and ISO dates become numbers and dates, everything else stays text. A column of postcodes with leading zeros should be quoted in the CSV or it becomes numbers.
- One CSV becomes one sheet; the delimiter is detected from the first lines (comma, semicolon or tab).
Questions
Does this handle commas in data?
Yes, standard CSV parsing handles quoted fields.
Will this stop Excel destroying my ID numbers?
It helps considerably. CSV has no type information, so Excel guesses on every open and strips leading zeros or reformats codes as dates. An .xlsx stores the cell type explicitly, so the values stay put.
Can I add formulas afterwards?
Yes — the output is a normal Excel workbook, so formulas, charts, conditional formatting and extra sheets all work as usual.
Are delimiters other than commas handled?
Common delimiters including semicolons and tabs are detected. Semicolon-separated files are standard in several European locales and convert without special handling.
