What Crop Image does

Trim an image down to the part you actually want. Most crops are driven by a requirement rather than taste: an application portal demanding a square photo, a document scan with the desk visible around the edges, or a screenshot that needs the browser chrome removed before it goes into a report.

When you'd use it

  • Cutting a screenshot down to the part that matters
  • Trimming a photo to a square for a profile picture
  • Removing a stranger from the edge of a picture

Limitations

  • Crop coordinates are in pixels of the original image; the preview is scaled, so a 1-pixel drag on screen can be several pixels in the file.
  • The crop is rectangular only; there are no circular or freeform masks.

Questions

How do coordinates work?

Left/Top = start point, Right/Bottom = end point in pixels.

Does cropping lose quality?

The pixels you keep are untouched, so the retained area is exactly as sharp as the original. What changes is the total resolution — cropping to a quarter of the frame leaves you with a quarter of the pixels, which matters if the result then has to be enlarged.

How do I crop to a specific size like 300x300?

Crop to the square region you want first, then run the result through the resize tool to set the exact pixel dimensions. Doing it in that order avoids stretching the subject.

Can I crop a scanned document straight?

Cropping removes the margins but does not correct a tilt. If the scan is skewed, rotate it first, then crop the cleaned-up edges.
