Why PowerPoint files get so large
A .pptx is a zip archive, and almost all of its weight is images. PowerPoint embeds pictures at full resolution even when you have scaled them down to a corner of a slide — a 4000-pixel photo displayed two inches wide is still stored as a 4000-pixel photo. Paste in a dozen screenshots and a stock image or two and a deck crosses 50 MB without feeling large to work in.
The second culprit is embedded media and fonts. An embedded video is carried whole inside the file, and 'embed fonts in the file' — often left on by default in corporate templates — can add several megabytes per typeface. Cropping an image in PowerPoint hides the cropped area rather than deleting it, so the discarded pixels ship with the deck too.
Compression targets exactly this: images are resampled to the resolution they are actually displayed at and re-encoded, cropped regions are discarded, and redundant resources are dropped. Text, layout, animations, and slide structure are untouched, which is why a deck usually loses 60–80% of its size with no visible difference on screen or in a projector.

Do these tools work with .ppt as well as .pptx?
Yes. Both the legacy binary .ppt format and the modern .pptx XML format are accepted. Output is .pptx, which every current version of PowerPoint, Google Slides, Keynote, and LibreOffice Impress opens.
Will converting change my fonts or layout?
No. Conversions preserve the slide masters, layout, and text as-is. If a deck uses a font that is not installed on the rendering side, the closest metric-compatible substitute is used so line breaks and spacing stay put rather than reflowing.
Can I edit the PowerPoint that PDF to PPT gives me?
Yes — that is the point of it. You get a real .pptx with selectable text boxes and separate elements, not one flat image per slide. Complex or heavily designed PDFs will need some cleanup, but the content is editable rather than locked.
Is there a limit on deck size or number of slides?
There is no slide count limit and no artificial size cap. Very large decks simply take longer to upload depending on your connection.
Do I lose quality when I compress a deck?
Images are resampled, so there is a technical loss — but to the resolution the slide actually displays at. On screen and when projected the difference is not visible. If you are sending a deck to a commercial printer, keep the original.
