What Edit PDF does
Most online PDF editors let you draw a white box over the old text and type over it. It looks fine until the file is zoomed, printed, searched or opened in another viewer — and the old text is still in the file. DocsBolt's Edit PDF works the other way round: you search for the text, pick the occurrence on the page, type the replacement, and the original characters are removed from the page and the new ones written where they were. Images work the same way: pick one in the Images tab, upload the new picture, and it takes the old one's frame — position, size and rotation included. It runs without an account, adds no watermark, and downloads a normal PDF.
When you'd use it
- A name, date or amount that is wrong in a contract you no longer have the source of
- Swapping an old logo on a letterhead PDF for the new one
- Fixing a typo in a PDF someone else exported
How it works
- 01
Upload the PDF
The document opens in the editor with a page preview.
- 02
Search and select
Type the text to change, pick the occurrence on the page — or open the Images tab and pick a picture.
- 03
Replace and download
Type the new text or upload the new image; the edit lands in the original spot. Download when done.

Limitations
- Text on scanned pages cannot be searched or replaced — there are no characters, only a picture of them. Image replacement still works there.
- Most PDFs embed only the letters they use, so a replacement that needs other letters is set in the same family from the server's font library (Arial, Times, Courier, Calibri and Cambria have metric-identical twins there; DejaVu and Noto are present); an unusual brand font falls back to a standard face and will look slightly different.
- Text drawn as vector outlines or inside form fields is not found by search.
- Replacing one image object replaces every place the page reuses it — a repeated logo changes everywhere at once.
Questions
Is this really editing, or a white box over the old text?
Really editing. The matched characters are removed from the page's content stream and the replacement is written at the same baseline, so nothing is hidden under a rectangle — the old text is gone from the file, not covered, and copy-paste or search on the edited PDF finds only the new text.
Will the replacement look like the original?
Size, colour, position and rotation are taken from the original text. The original font is reused when the PDF embeds a full copy of it; most PDFs embed only the letters they use (a subset), so if the replacement needs a letter the subset lacks, the same family is taken from DocsBolt's font library — DejaVu, Noto, and the metric-identical twins of Arial, Times, Courier, Calibri and Cambria — in the matching weight and style. Only when the family is unknown does a standard Helvetica, Times or Courier step in, and the page tells you either way.
What if the new text is longer than the old?
If there is empty space after the original on that line, the new text runs into it at the same size. If not, the size is reduced just enough to fit, never below 6 pt or 60 % of the original. If it still cannot fit, the tool refuses with the number of characters that would, rather than overwriting the next word.
Can I edit a scanned PDF?
Not the text — a scan has no characters to search, only a picture of them. Image replacement works on scanned pages. OCR-based editing of scans is planned; the editor is built so it can be added without changing how search and replace work.
Is my PDF uploaded to a server?
Yes — each edit is processed on a DocsBolt server, because removing text from a PDF's content stream reliably needs a full PDF engine. The file is sent over an encrypted connection and is not stored: the edited PDF comes straight back and the upload is discarded, and your browser keeps the working copy between edits.
Does it change anything else in the PDF?
No. Pages, page sizes, other text, images, links, form fields and metadata stay as they were. Only the characters or image you picked are touched. Fonts that were reused are trimmed back to the letters in use so the file does not grow.
Can I edit a PDF without installing software?
Yes. The whole workflow — upload, search, replace, download — runs in the browser page against DocsBolt's server; there is nothing to install and it works on Windows, macOS, Linux, iPad and Android.
Can I edit a PDF without signup or a watermark?
Yes. No account, no e-mail, no watermark on the output and no page limit beyond the 25 MB upload cap that applies to every server tool on DocsBolt.
Can I change several things in one PDF?
Yes. Each replacement is applied to the working copy and the preview updates; keep searching and replacing, and download once at the end. Undo steps back through your edits one at a time, Reset returns to the untouched original.
Why does the replacement text look slightly different from the text around it?
The PDF embedded only the letters it used, and the replacement needed others — so a standard font in the same weight and style was substituted. Replacing with text that uses only letters already on the page keeps the original font; a note under the Replace button tells you which case you hit.
Can I move text or add new text where there was none?
Not with this tool — it changes existing content in place. To add a signature use Sign PDF, to add page numbers use Add Page Numbers, and to stamp text over pages use Add Watermark.
