What EPUB to PDF does

EPUB is built to reflow — text resizes to the screen, pages are whatever the reader makes them — which is ideal for reading and awkward for anything else. Printing, annotating with a stylus, submitting a manuscript, or reading on a device that only understands PDF all need fixed pages. This tool lays the book out on A4 pages with LibreOffice's EPUB import: chapters start on new pages, headings and images keep their place, and the table of contents and footnote links still jump where they should. It works on DRM-free files only. Books bought from major stores are usually locked, and this tool does not unlock them; books from Project Gutenberg, Standard Ebooks, DRM-free publishers and your own drafts convert without trouble.

When you'd use it

  • Printing a public-domain book chapter for a class
  • Reading an eBook on a device without an EPUB app
  • Annotating a book in a PDF reader

Limitations

  • Only DRM-free EPUBs can be opened; a book bought with DRM will fail.
  • EPUB is reflowable, so the PDF fixes it to one page size; the page count depends on the font size chosen, not on the book's own pagination.

Questions

Can I convert a book I bought from Amazon or Apple?

Only if it is DRM-free. Purchased books are usually locked with DRM, which this tool does not and will not remove. EPUBs from Project Gutenberg, Standard Ebooks, publishers' DRM-free stores and your own writing all convert fine.

Why is the page count so different from my reader?

EPUB text reflows to the screen, so 'pages' in a reader depend on font size and device. The PDF fixes the text at a print size on A4, which usually gives more pages than a phone shows.

Are footnotes and the table of contents kept?

Yes. Chapter links in the table of contents still jump to the right page, and footnote links work inside the PDF.

Can I change the page size or font?

Not at present — the output is A4 with the book's own styles. For fine control over typography, Calibre's EPUB-to-PDF conversion offers every setting; this tool is for when you need a good default quickly.

Why is the PDF much larger than the EPUB?

An EPUB is compressed HTML; a PDF stores rendered pages and embedded fonts. A 300-page novel typically becomes a 1–3 MB PDF, more if it has many images.

Does it work with EPUB 3 and fixed-layout books?

EPUB 2 and EPUB 3 reflowable books convert well. Fixed-layout EPUBs — comics, picture books — are better served by their publisher's PDF edition, as the reflow engine does not reproduce their page designs.
