FAQ
What is the difference from PDF to JPG?
PDF to JPG renders whole pages as pictures. This tool takes the individual images that were placed inside the PDF, at their own resolution, without the text and layout around them.
Why did I get no images?
The PDF contains none — its content is text and vector drawings (shapes, charts drawn as lines). Vector artwork is not an image and cannot be extracted as one; use PDF to PNG to capture the page instead.
Why is one image very large?
Scanned PDFs store each page as one full-page image. Extracting them gives you the raw scans, which is often exactly what you want.
Why are there more images than I can see?
Some layouts build one visible picture from several tiles, and some place a soft-edged mask as a separate image. Each is extracted; you will recognise the ones you want by size.
Are the images the same quality as in the PDF?
Yes — they are copied out, not re-rendered. A JPG comes out with the same compression it went in with; a PNG is lossless.
Can I choose which pages to extract from?
Extraction covers the whole document. If you only need one page's images, extract that page first with Extract Pages, then run this tool on the result.
About Extract Images
The photographs in a PDF brochure, the figures in a paper, the logo in a letterhead — all of them are stored inside the file as images at whatever resolution they were placed at, usually far higher than a screenshot of the page would give you. This tool pulls each one out as its own file, JPG for photographs and PNG for anything with sharp edges or transparency, named by the page it came from. It is the right way to recover an original image you no longer have separately. It is the wrong way to capture a page's appearance: for that, PDF to PNG renders the page, text and all.
