FAQ
Why do my filled-in values disappear when someone else opens the form?
Some viewers — browser previews and many phone apps — do not render form field values. Flattening draws the values into the page itself, so every viewer shows them.
Can the values be recovered after flattening?
No. Flattening is one-way. Keep the fillable original if you may need to change it later.
What if my PDF has no form fields?
The tool tells you so. A PDF without fields is already flat; there is nothing to do.
Does flattening remove signatures or annotations?
It removes form fields — text boxes, checkboxes, radio buttons, dropdowns — and keeps their values. Sticky-note comments and drawn annotations are not fields and are left as they are.
Will the fonts look the same after flattening?
Values are drawn with the font the field was set to use. If the form relied on a font that is not embedded, a standard substitute is used, which can look slightly different but stays legible.
Why does a portal ask for a flattened PDF?
Because its own viewer or archive system cannot handle interactive fields, or because it needs the document to be tamper-evident. Flattening satisfies both.
About Flatten PDF
A fillable PDF stores what you typed as data attached to each field, separate from the page. That is convenient while the form is being filled and a liability afterwards: another viewer may not display the values, a recipient can change them with one click, and some upload portals reject any PDF that still contains form fields. Flattening draws every field's current value onto its page and then removes the field, leaving an ordinary static PDF that looks identical everywhere and cannot be quietly edited. Do it as the last step, after the form is complete and checked, because there is no way back to the fillable version from the flattened one.
